Dr. R A Mashelkar, Director General, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, said in his keynote address “India enjoys the highest position in the world with regard to returns of intellectual property per dollar spend. It is very heartening to see that Elsevier chose young scientists to honour and I congratulate them on this endeavour”. Mr. Frank Vrancken Peters, Managing Director of Elsevier gave away the awards to the winning scientists – they took home a beautiful crystal trophy and a cash award of Rs. 50,000/-. He said “India has contributed so much to the world of science and it is an honour to be present amongst India’s scientific elite.

Mr. Eduard Cohen, Director – International Markets touched upon the investments both in terms of the financials and human resources. In India alone, Elsevier’s offshore investments are to the tune of US$ 40 million employing more than 3000 personnel. On the research output from India, he remarked “Currently India’s share is only around 2% but the good news is that this graph is rapidly rising upwards. Studies reveal that access to electronic resources has positively impacted the research output and I am happy to see that 65% of the country’s usage has come from Elsevier’s ScienceDirect.“

The selection process involved senior academicians, subject experts and scientometricians from the eight subject areas in which the awards were given away. The evaluation criteria were both qualitative and quantitative criteria. For the former, the recently popular bibliometric tool – the Hirsch Index, published papers and citation data and the impact factors – another measurement tool for the quality of a journal were considered. Qualitative analysis was used to see if the research paper was path breaking and if it helped develop new insights into the field.
