2

Service is Sovereign: Planning, Implementing, and Assessing New Service Models for the 21st Century Library

Time: 3:45 - 5:00 pm

We hear all the time from Librarians who say "we always seem to be asked by our Administrators and Funders to justify the cost of our Library systems. How can we do this?"

Both our speakers will present insights into these topics of cost justification, performance measurement and return on investment. They will give us ways to provide this information to increase the appreciation of the Library and value of information resources to Administrators, Fund Providers and to the whole organisation.

We hope that this seminar will generate discussion and debate. We look forward to you being part of our LC Singapore Seminar by interacting and sharing with fellow colleagues and Elsevier.

Registration is free. Due to limited seating capacity, please register by 18 July 2008.

About the presentations

The Library as Strategic Investment: Results of the Illinois ROI Study

In an era of increased concern about accountability in higher education, it is critical for the library director to be able to effectively demonstrate the library’s value to the parent organization.

Discussions of the “return on investment” (ROI) for the funds provided to the library must be made in easily-articulated, quantitative terms that focus on outputs and results, rather than on our traditionally-reported input measures. In this presentation, we will report on a study undertaken at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to report on the return on the University’s investment in its library by developing a quantitative measure focused on the library’s impact on campus-wide initiatives, as represented by the contribution of access to digital content to the successful application for extra-mural (i.e., grant) funding. The study confirmed the benefits of using electronic resources and demonstrated their impact on research productivity over a 10-year period. The results of this study, which is believed to be the first of its kind, represent the first piece of the answer to the challenge of demonstrating quantitatively the university’s total return from its investment in its library.

Service is Sovereign: Planning, Implementing, and Assessing New Service Models for the 21st Century Library

The academic library of the 21st century will be distinguished by the scope and quality of its service programs. Fundamental changes in the academic and scholarly environment demand new approaches to defining core library services and to building capacity among our staff to deliver those services. In this presentation, we will identify emergent models of academic and scholarly service programs in leading libraries in the United States. We will identify best practices in the development of service-centered libraries, and discuss how you can identify, implement, and assess the success of programs that enhance the services you provide to users.

Be it public, academic or corporate libraries, this presentation will provide useful insights and, possibly, inspiration to new and alternative service models to deliver your services to your users.

About LibraryConnect Seminars

The LC Seminar is an event which offers unique opportunities for librarians and publishers to discuss common concerns in a neutral, non sales-oriented environment. For example, last year for our LC Seminar in Australia, we invited Mr. Wan Wee Pin from National Library Board (NLB) Singapore to speak on how they are incorporating Web 2.0 technologies to new library services for the public. You will be able to see all the past presentations at our LC Seminars at this URL:
